MILTON, Mass. – Three starters scored in double figures to push the Curry College women's basketball team to a 63-42 victory over Gordon College on Tuesday night in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play. The Colonels rebounded from a four-point halftime deficit to outscore the Fighting Scots 40-15 in the second half. Curry improves to 11-10 overall and 8-5 in the CCC while Gordon falls to 6-16 overall and 3-10 in league play.

Freshmen Amanda Leal (Tyngsboro, Mass.) and Peyton Perine (Fairfax, Va.) led the Colonels with 19 points apiece. Perine picked up 10 rebounds for a double-double while Leal posted six boards, three assists, and a steal in 35 minutes. Senior captain Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) tallied 15 points on 7-for-18 shooting in 32 minutes. She also registered eight rebounds, four assists, and seven steals in 32 minutes of action.

Gordon sophomore Abby Vampatella (Mansfield Center, Conn.) led the visitors with 15 points on 3-for-6 shooting, including 2-for-3 from distance, and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Senior Brooke Dyson (Houston, Texas) contributed eight points on 2-for-12 shooting. Junior Alisha Henderson (7), junior Sarah Gibbs (Elizabethtown, Pa.) (5), freshman Delaney McDonnell (Wells, Maine), and freshman Hannah Vincent (Durham, N.H.) (2) rounded out the scoring. Gibbs also chipped in a game-high 11 rebounds.    

After the teams played an even opening stanza tied at 13, the Colonels scored the first four points of the second, all from Perine to make the score 17-13. Later in the frame, Gordon would grab its own four-point advantage following a successful free throw from Dyson to give the Fighting Scots a 27-23 lead with 16 seconds to go in the first half. Gordon shot 39.1 percent from the floor in the opening half while the Colonels were only able to muster a 22.9 shooting percentage.

The Fighting Scots came out of the break and stretched its lead to eight (31-23) following back-to-back buckets by Gibbs. Curry broke out of its shooting funk and went on an 18-0 run as the Colonels flipped the score in a positive direction, 40-31, following a trey from Leal. The lead reached double digits before the end of the third and was sent north of 20 in the final frame.

Henderson started things for Gordon in the fourth quarter with a triple to cut the Curry lead to seven. The Colonels then answered back in a big way with a 14-0 spurt to extend the lead to 21, 58-37, with 5:16 remaining. Curry held the visitors to 14 percent shooting in the final 12 minutes en route to the 21-point victory.  

Curry (11-10 overall, 8-5 CCC) will next play at Wentworth on Saturday, February 9 at 1:00 p.m. Gordon returns to the hardwood on Saturday at home against Salve Regina at 1:00 p.m.
