Academic Services for Student-Athletes

The Curry College Athletic Department is committed to providing the most efficient and effective support for all student-athletes.  The success the Colonels enjoy on the field, court or rink is not nearly as important as the achievements of the individual student-athletes in the classroom and often these successes go hand in hand. The Athletic Department to sponsors mandatory study halls for the athletes. Monitored study hall is offered multiple days and times each week during the academic year. The most critical period for students is generally in their first semester, so these study halls help student-athletes get into good time management strategies and study skill strategies.

Through cooperation with professional advisors, Academic Success, and Career and Experiential Learning Services student-athletes are offered guidance into major and minor fields of study.  Additional College support services provided include organized study sessions, tutorial services, time management, study skills instruction and direction for establishing college success strategies.

Curry’s support program includes:

Academic Monitoring:  Academic Alerts for student-athletes are sent to the  Athletics-Academics Liaison and then forwarded on to the Head Coach. The college also posts midterm grades. Coaches may also use a progress report system.

Mentoring/Guidance: Many individuals and departments meet with student-athletes, individually and in groups, regarding academic, athletic and/or personal issues. Some of these staff members may include coaches, athletic administrators, Academic Success staff, the department’s Wellness Coach, and staff from the college’s Health and Wellness Center.

Communication with Professors for Missed Class Time At the beginning of each semester, instructors are notified of each student-athletes travel/competitive game schedule. All efforts are made to minimize missed class time for competitions.  Academic Success Coordinators can also alert professors in the case of an emergency that a student would be unable to attend class.

Study Hall: Quiet, monitored study time is offered multiple times each week, meaning students do not have to schedule classes around study hall. Student-athletes are required to attend based on their class standing and current GPA. All first-year student-athletes are required to attend 3 hours of study hall per week during their first semester. After the first semester, students may be required to attend based on their class standing and GPA.

Academic Success, Tutors, and the Writing Center: Academic Success provides workshops throughout the academic year to assist students in developing their study skills, writing skills, time management skills, communication skills, and more. Peer and professional tutors are available at no cost to students. Curry also has a specific Writing Center.

Study Spaces: Both the Levin Library and The Learning Commons have designated small and large study spaces. Students have the opportunity to reserve these in advance.
