FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - The Curry College women's basketball team closed out the 2018 Cruzin' Classic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., presented by Trip Sports with a 68-51 loss to Simpson College on Friday night.
Senior Emily Irwin (Billerica,Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Colonels. Freshman center Peyton Perine (Fairfax, Va.) was the final Curry player in double figure scoring with 13 points while adding seven boards and two assists. Senior Molly Plunkett (Quincy, Mass.) pitched in eight points, six rebounds, and one assist.
Junior Janey Botkins (Walcott, Iowa) registered 15 points to pace the Storm (8-2 overall). Junior Jenna Taylor (Creston, Iowa) added a double-double of 10 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Cameron Kinade (Olathe, Kan.) tallied nine points and seven boards. Freshman Kia Rasmussen (Irwin, Iowa) pitched in a team-high seven points off the bench.
Simpson led 21-11 after the first and extended the margin to 19 at the end of the second 40-21.
The teams each put up 13 points in the third quarter as Irwin and Perine each put up six each in the frame. Freshman Amanda Leal (Tyngsboro, Mass.) added the 13th tally of the stanza as the Colonels faced a 53-34 deficit.
Curry outscored Simpson 17-15 in the final quarter, led by five points apiece from Irwin and Perine. The margin reached 22 as Rasmussen knocked down a three pointer with 9:41 left in regulation. The Colonels pulled to within as few as 12 after Perine converted two free throws with 2:35 remaining.
The Storm followed with five straight points to push the lead back up to 17 to make the final score, 68-51.
Curry (4-6 overall) will next host Thomas College on Saturday, December 29 at 2:00 p.m. Simpson travels to Dubuque, Iowa to open play in the Loras Classic against Elmhurst on Friday, December 28 at 6:00 p.m. CST.
