Women’s Volleyball Tripped Up by Fighting Scots

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team fell to conference opponent Gordon College Saturday afternoon by a final score of 3-1.

The Colonels were defeated by the Fighting Scots of Gordon College (25-14, 27-29, 25-18, 25-14).

With the loss, Curry moves forward with an overall record of 4-17 and 0-5 in the CCC.

The opening set of the conference matchup saw two evenly matched sides. Kills by Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.), Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine), and Jess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.) locked the matchup at 8-8. The Fighting Scots would then outscore the Colonels 16-6 to close out the first set.

The second set of the afternoon matchup began in a similar fashion with the two sides locked at 8-8. The Colonels regained the lead following a kill by freshman outside hitter Sonja Matheson, pushing Curry in front 12-11. The visiting Fighting Scots chipped away at the Colonels' lead, tying the game again at 19-19. A series of errors and a service ace from Lexie Jenkins (Burns, Wyo.) locked up the conference sides at 23 a piece. A kill from Curry's Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) pushed the Colonels in front 27-26. Two consecutive errors from the visitors granted the Colonels the second set victory, tying the match at one set a piece.

The Gordon College Fighting Scots held a lead in the third set until a kill from Lauren Guzman gave the Colonels a 12-13 lead. With only five more points tallied from the Colonels in the third set, Gordon College would take the third set by a score of 25-18.

The visiting Fighting Scots gained momentum in the fourth set, outscoring Curry 19-8 before three consecutive points by the Colonels to bring the score to 19-11. The Fighting Scots held the Colonels to just three more points in the fourth set, sealing the conference victory with a final set score of 25-14. 

The Colonels were led by Lauren Guzman (9 kills, 8 digs) and Brooke Reissfelder (14 assists, 10 digs).

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Tuesday as they travel to face CCC opponent Wentworth at 7 PM.
