Colonels Halted by Nor’easters

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team fell to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent University of New England 3-1 in Katz Gymnasium.

The Colonels were defeated by the Nor'easters of UNE 3-1 (14-25, 20-25, 25-20,13-25).

With the loss, Curry moves forward with a record of 3-13, 0-3 (CCC).

The first set of the conference contest saw a dominant Nor'easters side, holding the Colonels to just 14 points in the first set. Curry's Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) paced her side with 14 total attacks, converting just four to kills. UNE's Lauren Davenport propelled her side to the first set victory with six kills.

In the second set of the evening, Curry took an 8-5 lead early following a successful block by Lauren Guzman and Morgan Muscato (Plymouth, Mass.), prompting UNE's head coach, Ian Blanchard, to take a timeout. The Colonels would hold back the Nor'easters from closing in on their lead, claiming the second set victory on an error by the visitors. The Colonels marked a 57% attack percentage in the second set compared to UNE's 45%. 

The third set saw a close battle between the two conference sides, UNE holding the lead until the Colonels would tie the set at 8-8. The Nor'easters pushed forward to a 16-11 lead before kills from Curry's Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine) and Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) brought the Colonels within striking distance of the visitors. During the third set, five service aces from Curry's Amber Buttaro (Tewksbury, Mass.) kept the hosts in the fight. UNE's Viktoria Pavlyuk would mark a kill and seal the third set win, 25-20.

The visiting Nor'Easters continued their dominant offense into the final set, sealing the conference victory with a fourth set score of 25-13.

The Colonels were led by Lauren Guzman (12 kills, 9 digs) and Brooke Reissfelder (17 assists, 18 digs).

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Thursday as they host non-conference opponent Fisher College at 6:30 PM.
