Colonels Fall Short Against Falcons

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team was defeated by non-conference opponent Albertus Magnus Thursday evening at home.

The Colonels fell to the Falcons of Albertus Magnus (19-25, 25-14, 25-21, 24-26, 12-15).

With the loss, Curry moves forward with a record of 3-11, 0-2 (CCC).

The first set saw the visitors dominate for the opening seven points of the match. The Colonels would fight back, coming within one point of the Falcons at 14-13 following three Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) service aces and a recorded kill from Leah Oscar-Phoenix (Westwood, Mass.). The Falcons would hold the Colonels back, surging forward to take the first set 25-19.

The Colonels kicked the intensity up a notch after tallying seven unanswered points in the middle of the second set with kills by Jess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.), Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine), Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.), and two Avia Fraine service aces. Curry would retain the lead in the second set and take the set victory 25-14.

Albertus Magnus began the third set on a 7-1 scoring run, however, the Colonels would be able to tie the set at 12 a piece on numerous Guzman kills and service aces. With the score tied now at 17-17, the Colonels would take the lead following a series of errors by the visitors and kills from Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) and Brooke Reissfelder. An additional Matheson kill would seal the third set victory at 25-21. 

The fourth set saw the Colonels dominate as they marked a 10-3 scoring run, Curry's Guzman marking four kills in the dominant offense. The visiting Falcons made things interesting by clawing their way back to the Colonels' lead and eventually tying at 24-24. An attack error by the Colonels and a kill from Diana Kalman pushed the contest to a fifth set.

Albertus Magnus held the lead entering the fifth and final set of the evening, holding an 8-3 lead at the set's midpoint. The Colonels would mark multiple kills and service aces to bring the score to 12-10. Two kills from Albertus Magnus' Kalman and an error on the Colonels would send the visiting Falcons home with a 3-2 victory.

The Colonels were led by Lauren Guzman (18 kills, 16 digs), Sonja Matheson (7 kills, 9 digs), and Brooke Reissfelder (5 kills, 33 assists).

The Colonels will be back on the hardwood Saturday as they travel to face non-conference opponent Mitchell College at 12 PM.
