Women’s Volleyball Drops Dean College

FRANKLIN, Mass. - The Curry College Women's Volleyball team was victorious in a road match against non-conference opponent Dean College Wednesday evening.

The Colonels bested the hosting Bulldogs 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-23).

With the win, Curry continues their season with a record of 3-0.

The two sides began the first set evenly matched, both sides benefitting from the opposition's errors. Curry took the first substantial lead, charging forth on a 6-0 run with Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) on the serve.

Dean College responded with a scoring run of their own, tying the set at 15-15. Curry regained the lead following a series of attack and service errors from the Bulldogs. A kill from Curry's Leah Oscar-Pheonix (Westwood, Mass.) sealed the first set victory with a score of 25-21.

The second set saw the Colonels dominate for the majority of play, taking off on a 15-3 scoring run before the Bulldogs called a timeout. Curry College senior Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) tallied four kills in the scoring run.

The Bulldogs came alive following their timeout, keeping pace with the Colonels for the remaining 10 points. A kill from freshman outside hitter Sonja Matheson (Voluntown, Conn.) closed out the second set in favor of the visitors.

The final set saw both sides battle much like the opening set of the evening, Dean College staying within five points of the Colonels for the duration of play. A kill and two errors late in the set brought the hosting Bulldogs within one point of the Colonels, 23-22, before head coach Sarah Hollis elected to take a timeout.

An error by the hosts in collaboration with a kill by sophomore Jess Sullivan (Meredith, N.H.) closed out the non-conference matchup with the Colonels taking the victory 3-0.

Senior Lauren Guzman led the Colonels with 14 kills on 38 attacks with 12 digs. Senior Brooke Reissfelder (Biddeford, Maine) led the Colonels in both assists (27) and digs (14) in the win on the road.

The Colonels get back out on the court Saturday as they head to Fitchburg, Mass. to face Fitchburg State University and Nichols College in a tri-match set to begin at 1 PM.
