Women's Volleyball Splits Tri-Match with Fisher and Mass. Maritime

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team split matches against Fisher College and Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday in a non-conference tri-match at Katz Gymnasium. Curry fell to Fisher 3-1 (24-26, 25-21, 25-17, 25-18), before sweeping the Bucaneers 3-0 (25-11, 25-21, 25-13).

With the split, Curry moves to 5-1 on the season.

Curry prevailed in a tightly contested opening set by the narrow margin of 26-24 to open the day against Fisher, but couldn't find its groove offensively in the three sets that followed to suffer its first defeat of the season. In sets two through four, Curry had an attack percentage of just .074 combined, after hitting .154 in set one.

Reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference Player of the Week Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) stayed red hot in the opening match of the day, pacing the Colonels with 15 kills, while adding 10 digs for the double-double. Libero Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) led Curry defensively with 20 digs, while Lauren Guzman (Cranston, R.I.) and Faith Herity (River Edge, N.J.) also reached double figures in digs with 12 and 11 respectively.

The Colonels returned to form in the second match of the day, dominating Mass. Maritime in straight sets. The hosts hit .183 as a team to cruise to the victory. 

Pereira was again Curry's strongest attacking player with nine kills to go along with nine digs. Guzman was the only Colonel to reach double figures in digs, scooping up 10 balls off the floor in the victory. Senior Amanda Wood (Tokyo, Japan) also contributed offensively for Curry, picking up seven kills on just 13 attempts.

Curry will return to the floor for its third meeting of the season against Anna Maria on Tuesday night. First serve from Paxton, Mass. is scheduled for 6 p.m.
