Women's Volleyball Knocks Off Anna Maria in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's volleyball team opened its 2021 season in win column on Wednesday evening, defeating Anna Maria College in straight sets at Katz Gymnasium. Set scores were 25-14, 25-11, 25-13.

With the win, Curry improves to 1-0 on the season, while Anna Maria drops to 0-1.

The Colonels dominated from the outset, scoring eight of the match's first 10 points to take an 8-2 lead. The AMCats were never able to recover from the early deficit as the Colonels took the set 25-14. Colonel senior Faith Herity (River Edge, N.J.) led all players with four kills on just six attempts in the opening set.

Curry used a 9-0 run midway through the second set to cruise to a 25-11 final. Herity ripped off three consecutive service aces during the run that saw the Colonel lead go from 9-5 to 18-5.

The Colonels never looked back after opening the third and final set on a 7-0 run to close out the season-opening victory. Senior Lexi Pereira (Attleboro, Mass.) recorded six of her match-high 12 kills in the closing set to pace the Colonels. 

Pereira was the only player in double figures with her 12 kills, and finished off the double-double with 10 digs. Herity followed up Pereira with eight kills of her own. Defensively, Curry was led by libero Avia Fraine (Mattapoisett, Mass.) with 13 digs. The Colonels hit .268 as a team, with 30 kills and just eight attack errors.

Anna Maria was paced by senior outside hitter Julia Rutkowski, who finished with five kills and eight digs. 

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday for a non-league tri-match at Mass. Maritime.
