MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Wesleyan University women's volleyball team continued its solid play with two victories over Worcester State University, 3-1 (25-17, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24) and Curry College 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-15), in the second day of the quad match hosted at Silloway Gym to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Curry College defeated Mitchell College 3-2 (25-19, 14-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-6) in its first match, while Worcester St. cruised to a 3-0 victory over Mitchell in its second match, 3-0 (25-8, 25-17, 25-21). Wesleyan ended the quad match with a perfect 3-0 record, with Worcester St. finishing at 2-1. Curry came in a 1-2 and Mitchell lost all three matches.
Curry College outlasted Mitchell 3-2 in its first match of the day with sophomore Kayla Pedersen tallying eight kills. Classmate Nicole Grambley added 11 assists, while freshman Taylor Faieta had four aces from service line. Fellow freshman Courtney Carroll had 31 digs in the victory.
In the second match of the day Wesleyan cruised to a 3-0 victory over Curry. Jumping out to a 10-1 lead in the opening set, Wesleyan set the tone for the rest of the match. After the score was 15-4, Curry battled back to get the count to 22-11, but Wesleyan's talent was too much to handle and the set ended, 25-14.
Wesleyan continued to ride the momentum from the first set and was in complete control of the second set at 19-2. Curry hung in there and made a set out it by getting to 12 points, but the Cardinals composed themselves to end the second set, 25-12.
The final set was tied at four a side before Wesleyan took eight of the next nine points to take a 12-5 lead. The Cardinals extended their lead to 17-8 and ended the set with a 25-15 victory.
The Cardinals hit .409 as a team and were led again by freshmen Taylor and Swenson, who combined for 24 kills, 10 digs and a block assist. Classmate Caroline Deimer added 10 kills with Larson assisting on 22 points and sophomore Heidi Westermen assisting on 10.
Curry had 17 total kills and hit .056 for the match. Grambley led her squad with five kills, while four Colonels tallied three kills apiece in the loss.
Wesleyan next travels to Eastern Connecticut on Wed., Sept. 17 at 6:30 pm where it look to match its best start in seven years as Wesleyan started 6-1 in 2007. Curry hosts Anna Maria on Tues., Sept. 16, while Worcester St. travels to Mass. Maritime that same day. Mitchell's next contest is a home match against Mt. Ida on Wed., Sept. 17.
