MILTON, Mass. – Visiting Western New England recorded 39 total kills from 10 different players, notching a 3-0 victory over Curry Tuesday night in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) match. Set scores were 25-19, 25-12 and 25-15. The Golden Bears improve to 18-5 overall and 5-1 in the CCC, while the Colonels slip to 7-13 overall and 0-7 in league play.
In the opening set, Curry jumped out to a 7-4 lead, but Western New England went on a 5-1 run to take a lead it would not relinquish. In the second set, the Golden Bears took control from the start and eased their way to a 25-12 win. The final set began with Western New England on a 5-0 run, but Curry fought back to tie the score at 8-8. The Golden Bears would score 17 of the next 24 points, however, to wrap up a 3-0 victory.
Senior Devyn Frank (Mystic, Conn.) paced the Golden Bears with 11 kills, while junior Tyler Singh (Dumont, N.J.) chipped in with seven kills. Senior Heather Mears (Amherst, Mass.) led Western New England with 18 assists, while freshman Rachel Meachem (Miskayuna, N.Y.) dished out 14 helpers. Sophomore Grace Kucharski (Avon, Conn.) collected a match-high 14 digs. Senior Jennifer Mears (Amherst, Mass.) followed Kucharski with seven digs.
Freshman Mary Frances Usenik (Kennebunkport, ME) led Curry with five kills and six digs, while sophomore Hannah Robison (Cumberland, R.I.) dished out a team-high eight assists. Junior Tyla Miller (Marshfield, Mass.) amassed six digs. Sophomore Christina Wallis (Peabody, Mass.) recorded one block solo and two block assists, while classmate Tiana Sturtze (Worcester, Mass.) contributed three block assists.
The Golden Bears return to action on Saturday in a tri-match, facing host Wesleyan at 11:00 a.m. and W.P.I. at 1:00 p.m. The Colonels return to action on Thursday, visiting Suffolk for a non-conference tilt starting at 7:00 p.m.
