Women's Tennis Falls Short in Opening Day Thriller

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's tennis team fell to UMass Dartmouth in a 5-4 nail-biter Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Trent J. Scott '96 Tennis Courts.

With the defeat, Curry drops to 0-1 overall on the season, while UMass Dartmouth improves to 2-0.

The Corsairs jumped out to an early 2-1 lead after snagging a pair of wins in doubles play. Curry got its lone victory at third doubles, where sophomore Cayla Osowski (Westfield, Mass.) and Grace Coopee (Hampden, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 victory.

Curry won three of the first four singles matches to wrap up to take a 4-3 lead. Freshman Esme Lehner (Annapolis, Md.) took care of business playing sixth singles in her first collegiate match, taking down her opponent by a score of 6-1, 7-6 (7-2), followed by three-set victories by Coopee and senior Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) at the fifth and third positions respectively.

After Curry fell at second singles to tie the score at 4-4, all eyes turned to Court 1, where Corsair junior IsaBella Winter and Colonel junior Sasha Borkov (Newton, Mass.) were going toe-to-toe. Borkov took set one 6-4, but Winter rallied in set two, breaking serve with Borkov serving for the match and eventually forcing a third set by a margin of 7-5. Winter jumped out quickly to a 5-0 lead in set three, but Borkov rallied all the way back to make it 5-4 before Winter finally closed the door to lift the Corsairs over the top.

Curry will be off for a week before continuing their season-opening home stand against Lesley University on September 10 at 12 p.m.
