Gordon Tops Women’s Tennis in Conference Match

WENHAM, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team fell at the hands of Gordon College this afternoon by a score of 9-0. With the win, the Fighting Scots improve to 3-3 on the year with a 1-1 mark in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Colonels are searching for their first win on the year at 0-7 with an 0-2 CCC record.

Gordon took each of the three doubles matches to start the afternoon. Anne Carsey (Flagstaff, Ariz.) and Madison West (Southampton, N.Y.) beat Sophia Wiernusz (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alison Daigle (Edgartown, Mass.) 8-4 to take first doubles. Jordyn Maddex (Andover, Kan.) and Emily Ontiveros (Sylmar, Calif.) bested Natalie Valvo (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Kelsie Merrill (Hope, Maine) at second, 8-1. The Scots took third doubles by default.

At first singles, West outlasted Wiernusz 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 10-6 in a super tiebreaker. At second, Maddex edged Daigle 6-4, 6-3, while Anna Mullane (North Chelmsford, Mass.) topped Valvo 6-0, 6-1 at third. Abigail Graves (Whitinsville, Mass.) took fourth over Merrill 6-1, 6-3, and Meli Markarian (Sutton, Mass.) topped Samantha Gilbert (Bedford, Mass.) 6-1, 6-0 at fifth. The Scots completed the sweep by taking sixth singles by default.

The Colonels will return to the court tomorrow for a home match against St. Joseph (Conn.) at 3:30 p.m. Gordon will continue their CCC schedule as they head to Salve Regina for a 12:00 p.m. match on Saturday, September 21. The Seahawks and Scots will both enter the match with a 1-1 conference mark.
