Women's Tennis Falls to Johnson & Wales, 9-0, in Season Opener

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team fell to visiting Johnson & Wales, 9-0, at the Big Nine Courts on Thursday afternoon.  With the win the Wildcats improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Colonels fall to 0-1 overall.

The Wildcats swept all six singles matches and all three double matches.

Johnson & Wales No. 1 singles player, senior Samantha Jo Borr (Westfield, N.J.) won her match 6-2, 6-0 against junior Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.).  Sophomore No. 2 singles player Morgan Thompson (Fargo, N.D.) claimed her tilt verse sophomore Kayla Prete (Orange, Conn.), 6-1, 6-0. The Wildcats pair also won their No. 1 doubles match, 8-2 over Love and Prete.

In No. 3 singles, the Colonels freshman Laura Ferris (Shelton, Conn.) was bested by senior Stephanie Piperis (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) 6-0, 6-0. Junior Emily Glass (Sterling, Conn.) earned the No. 4 singles win for Johnson & Wales, 6-0, 6-1 by defeating freshman Alexandra Moschetto (Hampton Falls, N.H.). The Wildcats senior Gabrielle Longo (Pennsylvania, Pa.) earned 6-3, 6-1 wins over junior Hannah Erickson (Mount Desert, Maine) and at the #6 position freshman Taylor Klein defeated senior Alison Rhodes (Rye, N.H.) by default. 

In doubles, the No. 2 duo of Glass and Longo bested Ferris and Moschett, 8-0.  In the final match on the day, No.3 doubles partners, Piperis and Klein outlasted Rhodes and Erickson, 8-1.

The Colonels return to action on Saturday, September 6 at 1:00 when they host conference opponent Eastern Nazarene.  The Wildcats will return to action on Wednesday, September 10, when they travel to UMass-Boston for a 3:30 match.
