MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's tennis team earned a win in their second conference match of the season defeating visiting Wentworth, 5-4, at the Big Nine Courts on Friday afternoon.
The Colonels won five of the six singles matches while the Leopards swept all three double matches.
The only loss came at the #1 singles spot. Wentworth's sophomore Caitlin Corcoran (Brockton, Mass.) knocked off Curry's senior Megan Mulrooney (South Boston, Mass.), 6-7, (7-5), 6-3, 6-3. The Colonels went on to win the next five matches. At the #2 slot Emily Mongello (Plymouth, Mass.) defeated senior Deborah Massaro (Stony Point, N.Y.), 6-1, 6-0. At #3 freshman Molly Louis (Guilford, Conn.) took care of sophomore Nicole McColgan (Tewksbury, Mass.), 6-2, 6-1, at #4 senior Lauren Chuha (Reading, Mass.) bested junior Virginia Ofer (Cooperstown, N.Y.), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. At the #5 position sophomore Kimberly Love (Windsor Locks, Conn.) conquered junior Val Maccarone (Cranston, R.I), 6-1, 6-1. And in the final singles match, senior freshman Kayla Prete (Orange, Conn.) captured 5-7, 6-2, 6-1 victories over senior Olivia Hegner (Medford, Mass.).
In doubles, the Leopards earned all three points when Corcoran and Ofer teamed up to beat Mongello and Chuha, 8-6 at #1. At #2, Massaro and McColgan defeated Curley and senior Elizabeth Zarkades (Beverly, Mass.), 8-4. In the final doubles match and #3 slots, Maccarone and Hegner overpowered Louis and Prete, 8-6.
The Colonels next match is at home against conference opponent Roger Williams on September 18 in a 3:30 match. The Leopards travel to non-conference foe UMass Dartmouth on September 16 at 3:30 p.m.
