Women's Soccer Downs RIC in Non-League Play

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Curry College women's soccer team earned a 3-1 victory over Rhode Island College on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

Curry (4-5-0 overall) got goals from three different players and held a 24-22 advantage in shots. The Colonels went up 3-0 before the Anchorwomen (2-6-0 overall) got on the scoreboard in the 73th minute.

Freshman Madison Conway (West Springfield, Mass.) scored in the 14th minute to get things going for Curry. Sophomore Felicity Monfils (North Attleboro, Mass.) launched a through ball, splitting two RIC defenders to find Conway, who fired in a shot for her first marker of the season. The goal was the lone tally of the first half.

Junior Tayla Randall (Walpole, Mass.) increased the lead to 2-0 in the 52nd minute after sophomore Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.) used her speed and dribbled the ball down the sideline into the box. Borges took a shot that was blocked by an Anchorwomen defender, but the ball found the foot of Randall, who capitalized on a virtually empty net. The goal was Randall's team-leading eighth of the season. She also hit a career milestone, breaking 50 career points.

It did not take the Colonels long to add to the lead, when Monfils scored in the 60th minute, coming off a pass from Randall, to go up 3-0.

RIC cut into the deficit in the 73rd minute when freshman Alexandra Amore (Saunderstown, R.I.) was able to gain possession of a loose ball in front of the Curry goal, turned and let off a shot that hit off the left post and into the net for the host's lone score of the evening.

Freshman Oliver Hutchinson (Scituate, Mass.) finished with 12 saves in the victory. Classmate Lilia Leonard (Quincy, Mass.) played the final 9:23 in goal and registered one save.  Senior Emily Edwards (North Kingstown, R.I.) made 12 stops in goal for the Anchorwomen.

Curry will next play at Roger Williams on Saturday, September 28 for a conference tilt at noon. Rhode Island College also resumes conference action on Saturday at Western Connecticut State. Match time is set for 2:00 p.m.
