Monfils Nets Game-Winner to Send Women's Soccer Past Plymouth State

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team edged Plymouth State University by a 3-2 final on Tuesday night in non-league action at Walter M. Katz Field.

Sophomore Felicity Monfils (North Attleboro, Mass.) scored the game-winner in the in the 71st minute, her first goal of the season. Junior Tayla Randall (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Maddie Wilson (Millbury, Mass.) also recorded goals for the Colonels, who improved to 3-4-0 overall on the season. Junior Mallory Lloyd (Hartland, Vt.) netted a pair of goals for the Panthers, who dropped to 2-4-0 overall.

Randall put Curry up 1-0 in the fifth minute after she settled a through pass from sophomore Samantha Borges (Somerset, Mass.). Randall dodged a defender and then buried the shot from 25 yards out to give the Colonels the 1-0 advantage.

Plymouth State equalized in the 23rd minute as the ball was served into the box and misplayed by two Curry defenders. Lloyd was able to gather possession and put a shot in the top right corner past freshman goalkeeper Lilia Leonard (Quincy, Mass.) for her second goal of the season.

Wilson later gave the Colonels the lead with her second tally of the season in the 26th minute. Randall served a ball into the box off a corner and found Wilson in front of the goal and she flicked it over the top of Panthers' sophomore goalkeeper Elena Register (Helena, Ala.) for the 2-1 lead.

Lloyd added her second goal in the 67th minute as she received a cross in from sophomore Taylor Siewierski (Colebrook, N.H.) after going by a Curry defender. The ball bounced in front of the goal and went off Lloyd's chest for the goal.  She gathered the ball and put it past Leonard and finishing it off with a volley to even the margin at 2-2. The goal was her third of the season, which is tied for the team lead.

Monfils netted the game-winner in the 71st minute as she was able to capitalize on a misplay by Register out of the goal and place a shot over her to give the Colonels the 3-2 victory.

Leonard finished with seven saves against nine shots on goal to record her first collegiate win. Register made seven stops against 17 total shots.

Curry will next play at home against Nichols College on Saturday, September 21 at 11:00 a.m. for its Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener. Plymouth State returns to action at home against Salem State University on Tuesday, September 24 at 4:15 p.m.
