Women's Soccer Battles the University of New England to a 0-0 Double Overtime Draw

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team tied Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent UNE, 0-0, in double overtime on Tuesday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. The Colonels moved to 11-6-2 on the season and 1-6-2 in the CCC. The Nor'easters finished the regular season at 11-3-2 overall and 5-2-2 in the CCC.

UNE controlled most of the first half outshooting Curry 8-1.  The Nor'easters landed seven of their nine shots on net forcing sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) to make some tough saves.  Stott was solid between the pipes however and was able to keep the game scoreless heading into break.

The Colonels held a slight advantage in shots in the second frame, 8-6.  Both teams pressured their opponent's goalkeepers but couldn't find the back of the net for a score.  UNE's sophomore goalkeeper Brielle Robinson (Monson, Mass.) made four stops, two of them diving saves.  Curry's freshman Cassandra Grasso (Wilmington, Mass.) had a great opportunity late in the frame when she ripped a shot high into the right corner of the goal just outside the 18-yard box.  Robinson however was able to leap to the ball keeping the Colonels off the scoreboard.  Stott also came up with four stops extending her save total to 11.  The Nor'easters had two great chances with just two minutes to play in regulation but both, sophomore Taylor Littlefield (Samford, Maine) and senior Margaret Palmer (Scarborough, Maine) shot high of the net.

Curry finished with nine shots, four on goal, 11 saves, six fouls and zero corner kicks throughout 90 minutes.  UNE finished with 15 shots, 11 on goal, four saves, eight fouls and four corner kicks.

Over the 20 minutes of overtime, the Nor'easters held a demanding 11-4 lead in shots.  The Colonels defense including Stott were put to the test but relentless play kept the game tied at zero through 110 minutes of soccer.  Stott was phenomenal in goal coming up with a career-high 19 saves.  Eight of her stops were in overtime action.  Robinson had three more stops in net for UNE for a game total of seven.  The Nor'easters led in all statistical areas other than saves.  UNE outshot Curry 26-13 with a 19-7 advantage on net and led in corners, 4-0.

Curry will wait to hear about an ECAC bid while #4 seed UNE will host #5 seed Gordon College in the CCC Quarterfinal match on Saturday, November 1 at 12:00 p.m.
