Women's Soccer Absorbs First Loss of the Season Falling to CCC Rival Roger Williams, 2-0

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's soccer team lost to Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent Roger Williams, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Walter M. Katz Field. The Colonels fell to 4-1 overall and 0-1 in the CCC. The Hawks improved to 4-2 on the season and 1-0 in the CCC.

The first half of the match was an evenly played game with Roger Williams outshooting Curry just 10-6.  The Hawks landed only three of their strikes on net with sophomore Morgan Stott (Dartmouth, Mass.) making the saves.  The Colonels had more chances to score as they placed five of their six on goal.  Freshman netminder Sydney Martin (Scarborough, Maine) however was solid between the pipes keeping them scoreless.  Over the 45 minutes both squads battled to get on the board first but headed into the break with a 0-0 score.

Roger Williams came out strong to start the second half but Curry's defense was strong not allowing them into in the 18-yard box, forcing the Hawks to take shots from far out.  Roger Williams took the first seven shots in in the opening 18 minutes.  Stott came up with four big stops during the frenzy.  At 62:26 junior Mariah Kaiser (Portsmouth, R.I.) ripped a shot just in front of the net with Stott having to make a diving save.  Stott though couldn't hold on to the ball and Curry's defense couldn't clear it out of their zone.  Just seconds later, Roger Williams' freshman Kasey Provost (Peabody, Mass.) took advantage of the loose ball and capitalized when she saw a wide open right side of the net placing it into the back to take a one-goal lead.  Curry's sophomore Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) had two back-to-back strikes that nearly went wide of the net.   After three more Hawk shots and two saves by Stott, Roger Williams sealed the win at the 78:03 minute mark.  Freshman Carla Salcedo (Mexico City, Mexico) sent a nice through ball to sophomore Jenna Hart (Cheshire, Conn.). Hart collected the pass and went one-on-one with Stott.  Stott came out to try and make the save but Hart one-timed it into the lower left corner of the net.  The Colonel's didn't let down controlling the remainder of the game.  Curry took three impressive shots, forcing Martin to come up with two tough saves.  Her final save and Curry's last shot and chance of cutting the lead to one came with 45 seconds to play.  Roger Williams committed a foul around the 20-yard line, which gave the Colonels a free kick.  Senior Stefanie Faucher (No. Grosvenordale, Conn.) stepped up to the ball and after the whistle sent it nice and high on goal but Martin made an impressive jumping stop to hold Curry scoreless and finish with a 2-0 shutout.

The Colonels finished with 11 shots, eight fouls and one corner kick. The Hawks finished with 22 shots, 10 fouls, and three corner kicks.

Stott made nine saves in goal for Curry in her first loss on the season.  Martin made seven saves in net for Roger Williams collecting her fourth win.

Curry returns to action on Thursday, September 18 when they travel to Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m. Roger Williams travels to M.I.T on Wednesday, September 16 in a 6:00 p.m. game start.
