FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 24, 2013) – Junior midfielder Kayla Bridges (Foxboro, Mass.) registered two goals to lift Fitchburg State over Curry College, 2-0 in non-conference women's soccer action this evening at Elliot Field.
In the opening period, the Falcons quickly grabbed the lead at the 3:25 mark as Bridges received a pass from classmate Kayla Philbrick (Chicopee, Mass.) and slipped the ball inside the near post for her third tally of the season.
Fitchburg State upped its margin in the 36th minute of action when Bridges collected a rebound off the foot of senior forward Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass.) and blasted a shot into the open net for her second score of the contest to make the score 2-0 going into intermission.
The Colonels best scoring opportunity of the stanza came at the 25:38 mark as freshman forward Kaitlyn Lima (New Bedford, Mass.) split a pair of defenders and fired a point blank shot on target, but Falcon goaltender Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) was able to deflect the shot off goal to prevent the scoring chance.
In the second frame, Curry turned up the offensive pressure as sophomore forward Taylor Evans (Middleton, Mass.) launched a shot that appeared to be going into the net at the 71:39 mark, until Kirouac made a sprawling save to her right to keep the shutout intact.
The Green and Gold's best chance of the half occurred with less than five minutes remaining in the match when junior midfielder Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) had a pair of shots in front of the goal turned aside by Colonel's goalie Hayley Lorge (Beverly, Mass.).
Throughout the contest, Fitchburg State out shot Curry 18-14, while also holding a slim 3-2 margin in corner kicks. Between the pipes, Kirouac posted seven saves in the complete game shutout victory for the Falcons, while Lorge stopped nine shots for Curry in 90 minutes of action.
Fitchburg State (2-5, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Thursday as it visits Nichols College at 4 p.m. Curry College (5-4-0, 1-1-0 TCCC) will travel to Wheelock College on Thursday at 3 p.m. (Game recap courtesy of Fitchburg State Sports Information)
