Women's Soccer Blanked, 2-0, by Visiting CCC Foe University of New England

MILTON, Mass. –Curry College women's soccer team lost to visiting Commonwealth Coast Conference opponent the University of New England, 0-2, on Wednesday afternoon.  The Nor’easters improve to 4-8 overall and even their record at 2-2 in the CCC.  The Colonels fell to 5-5-1 on the season, and 1-3 in the CCC.

The first half of play was even on the statistical chart, but it was the University of New England who held a 1-0 lead going into break.  At the 30:09 minute mark, junior Katy Marshall (Eliot, Maine) dribbled the ball past Curry’s junior defender Tiana Stanton (Springfield, Mass.) to go one-on-one with the Colonel’s keeper.  Marshall shot the ball in the top right hand corner of the net past senior netminder Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.).  Curry had a chance of their own late in the frame when senior Brooke Moore (Bellingham, Mass.) took a shot outside of the 18-yard box that skimmed the top of the post.  The teams battled for the remainder of the half, but the Nor’easters were able to hang on to the one goal lead.

Curry had eight shots, five on net and four fouls.  The University of New England had nine shots, seven on net and two fouls.

Despite the Colonels outshooting the Nor’easters, 16-10 in the final 45 minutes, solid play between the pipes from junior goalkeeper Samantha Guyette (Newport, Vt.) kept Curry scoreless and earned her team’s shutout.  The University of New England was also able to put up one more tally with 10:32 left in regulation.  The Colonels committed a foul around the 20-yard line which gave the Nor’easters a free kick.  The kick was blocked by Curry’s senior defender Lindsay Trudeau (Storrs, Conn.) but Marshall collected the rebound for her second marker on the night.  The Colonels’ fought hard in the last ten minutes, but were unable to net one of their own and took the 2-0 loss.

Curry finished with 24 shots, 12 on net, four corners and eight fouls.  The University of New England ended with 19 shots, 12 on goal, zero corners and five fouls.

Hardy made 10 saves in net for the Colonels in the loss.  Guyette made 12 saves, including the shutout for the Nor’easters in the win.

The Colonels will travel to take on CCC opponent Endicott College on Saturday, October 6 for a 4:30 p.m. game start.  The Nor’easters will host CCC opponent Salve Regina on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start.
