Women's Soccer Falls 6-0 to CCC Opponent Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. - Senior Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) compiled eight points on three goals and a pair of assists as the Salve Regina women's soccer team rolled to a 6-0 victory over Curry College during Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Brother Reynolds Field on Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Seahawks to 7-4-0 on the season and 2-1-0 during conference play, while the Colonels drop to 5-4-1 overall, including a 1-2-0 mark in the CCC.

Birrell contributed on five of her team's six goals and currently leads the conference with 30 points and 13 goals on the season. Freshman Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored twice for the Seahawks, while sophomore Lauren Bulk (Portsmouth, R.I.) added a marker of her own. Sophomore Angelina Saporito (Bristol, Conn.), junior Stephanie DeLue (Hadley, Mass.), and junior Erin McCullough (Ludlow, Mass.) each had an assist, while juniorJacqueline McPherson (Mansfield, Mass.) made eight saves to earn her third shutout in net, improving to 7-4-0 on the year.

Goalkeeper Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) made three saves for the Colonels, while slipping to 3-4-1 on the season.

The Seahawks wasted little time scoring, as sophomore Britt Blanchette (Hope, R.I.) delivered abeautiful pass over the defense to send Birrell who then drove to the net and slipped a pass across the goal to Figueiredo who finished to put Salve Regina on top, 1-0, after just 2:45 of play.

Salve Regina extended the lead to 2-0 in the 21st minute when Birrell sliced her way through the Curry defense and once again found Figueiredo for the score.

Just over three minutes later, Birrell took a feed from Saporito and found the back of the net to give Salve Regina a 3-0 edge, which held up until halftime.

Birrell helped the Seahawks put the game away in the second half, completing the hat trick with a pair of goals, one coming in the 58th minute, and the other in the 75th minute to stretch the SRU lead to 5-0.

Bulk added a goal in the final seconds, just before the horn sounded, to move the final score to 6-0.

Both teams return to conference action next Wednesday with Curry hosting UNE at 4 p.m., and the Seahawks traveling to face Roger Williams at 7 p.m. (Game Recap Courtesy of Salve Regina Sports Information)
