Women's Soccer Downs Colby-Sawyer 3-0

NEW LONDON, N.H. – Senior Samantha Velezis (Waterbury, Conn.) scored the game’s first goal in the 15th minute, which proved to be the game-winner in a 3-0 victory at Colby-Sawyer. Curry improves to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, while the Chargers dip to 2-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in TCCC play.

Senior Caitlin McKinney (Manchester, N.H.) set up the first goal of the contest when she took a free kick and hit the left post of the goal. The rebound came right to Velezis and she put the ball into the left corner of the net for her second tally of the season.

In the 33rd minute, Curry increased their advantage to 2-0 on a goal from freshman Brittney McLaughlin(Wilmington, Mass.). Colby-Sawyer keeper Shalyn Spencer (Natick, Mass.) came out to challenge the through ball from junior Suzanne Jensen (Framingham, Mass.), but McLaughlin made the first touch and slid the ball under Spencer and into the net.

Curry scored their third goal with under five minutes to go on a similar play that resulted in their second tally. Freshman Tiana Stanton (Springfield, Mass.) was running down the right flank and chipped the ball to the top of the 18-yard box to sophomore Kelly Howe (Walton, Neb.). Howe ripped a shot into the upper left corner of the net for her second goal of the season. 

Sophomore goalie Samantha Hardy (Pepperell, Mass.) was solid in net for the Colonels and made seven saves in the shutout. Spencer made two stops for the Chargers.

Colby-Sawyer plays at Roger Williams on Saturday at 3:30 pm. Curry will host Wentworth on Friday under the lights at 7:30 pm.
