BOSTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team lost its season opener, 13-12, to the Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon at Sweeney Field.

Sophomore Helen Hamblett (East Boothbay, Maine), junior Sarah Galan (Colchester, Conn.), and junior Bella MacMahon (North Yarmouth, Maine) each netted hat tricks for the Leopards (1-0 overall, 1-0 CCC). Junior Jorgie Pashalian (Cranston, R.I.) contributed a pair while freshman Jenna Viglione (Burlington, Mass.) and freshman Olivia Murray (Quincy, Mass.) added one goal each.

Senior Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) registered a game-high five goals while junior Sharon Doherty (North Easton, Mass.) finished with two to pace the Colonels (0-1 overall, 0-1 CCC). Freshman Ellie Hardman (Hanover, Mass.) pitched in a goal and three assists to join four others who found the back of the net.

The teams played an even opening 30 minutes, each potting five goals. Doherty and Parker got the scoring started for Curry on unassisted tallies. Hamblett put Wentworth on the board with a free position goal to make it 2-1 with 21:30 left in the half.

Trailing 12-9 in the second half, the Colonels slowly chipped away at the deficit as Parker and freshman Chloe Chevrier (West Suffield, Conn.) led the offensive charge. Parker scored two goals in a six-minute span, the last of which pulled Curry to within two, 13-11, with 3:54 to play.

Junior goalie Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) did her best to keep the Colonels close, making six of her 17 saves in the second half. However, the late charge from Curry would not be enough as they would fall in the one-goal contest.

Curry will next host Roger Williams University on Thursday, April 1 at 6:30 p.m. Wentworth returns to action at Salve Regina on Wednesday, March 31 at 7:30 p.m.
