Women's Lacrosse Topped By Western New England in CCC Quarterfinals

MILTON, Mass. – The fourth-seeded Curry College women's lacrosse team was eliminated by visiting Western New England University on Saturday afternoon in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Tournament Quarterfinals by a final score of 25-12 at Walter M. Katz Field. With the win, the Golden Bears move to 10-8 overall while the Colonels finish the season 10-8.

Curry was the first to get on the board in the contest on an unassisted goal by freshman Andria Torres (Milford, Conn.). Western New England answered with a 5-0 run that featured four different goal scorers. Freshman Hannah Jarvis (Westfield, Mass.) pitched in two while three others tallied a single marker each to push the score to 5-1. Junior Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) ended the scoring run and cut the deficit to three with her first goal of the afternoon.

The teams then traded the next six goals as the Golden Bears were ahead 8-4 after a marker by freshman Samantha Vitka (Stratford, Conn.) Sophomore Katie Parker (Branford, Conn.) netted the final goal of the six off a pass from freshman Sharon Doherty (North Easton, Mass.).

Western New England kept up the strong play by going on a 3-0 run to stretch the lead to 11-5. The markers on the run were scored by sophomore Reilly Miller (Goshen, N.Y.), senior Kristen Breen (Ellington, Conn.), and junior Kaitlyn Hutter (Stamford, Conn.).

Curry tallied two straight on back-to-back goals from Parker to trim the deficit to 11-7. The Golden Bears had a two-goal spurt of their own on markers by Breen and Jarvis. The Colonels then closed out the half with a goal by Dubel as they were down a player. The marker came on a free position shot to make the score 13-8 heading into the half.

Western New England used three sizable runs to break the game open in the second half. The Golden Bears started with a 3-0 run to double up Curry, 16-8. The Colonels responded with a 3-0 run of their own on goals by sophomore Allie Wysocki (Agawam, Mass.), Parker, and Dubel to trim the deficit to five 16-11.

Western New England then closed the game in impressive fashion, ending with a 9-1 run over the final 18:08. Breen and Mazza each had hat tricks on the spurt while Jarvis, Vitka, and sophomore Ashley Hudson (Lindenhurst, N.Y.) pitched in a goal each to make the score 25-12, the eventual final. Dubel netted the lone goal for the Colonels on the run.

Breen paced the Golden Bears with 10 points on seven goals and three assists. Mazza contributed five goals, Jarvis with four, and Miller finished with five points on four goals and one assist. Junior Eileen Ruby (New Fairfield, Conn.), Vitka, and Hutter also finished with multiple points for the visitors.

Parker led the way for the Colonels, netting a season and career-high five goals. Dubel finished with four while Doherty, junior Leona Stevens (Kingston, Mass.), and Torres were the final Curry student-athletes with multiple points. Doherty and Torres added a goal and an assist each while Stevens tossed in two assists.

Sophomore goalie Kaitlyn Marchant (Londonderry, N.H.) picked up the win in the cage for Western New England, converting 15 saves. Freshman Jessica Ginaitt (Warwick, R.I.) converted 15 saves in the loss for the Colonels.

Western New England advances to the CCC Tournament Semifinals, where they will travel to top-seeded Endicott College on Tuesday, April 30 for a 7:00 first draw. The loss ends the season for Curry.
