Women’s Lacrosse Clipped By Gordon in CCC Opener, 11-10

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's lacrosse team lost a close one goal contest to Gordon College by a final of 11-10 in the Commonwealth Coast Conference opener for both teams. With the win, the Fighting Scots move to 5-3 overall and 1-0 in the CCC. The Colonels drop to 3-5 overall and 0-1 in conference play.

Gordon struck first off a goal just 27 seconds into the contest off a tally from Anna Rourke (Hamilton, Mass.). Curry responded with a goal of their own at the 26:01 mark, thanks to a goal from Abby Dubel (Wolfeboro, N.H.) to knot the contest at a goal apiece.

Olivia McCarrick (Glen Burnie, Md.) and Rachael Lawrence (Hanover, Mass.) traded goals as the game would move to a tied 2-2 score with 20:42 mark.

The Fighting Scots would then embark on a mini 2-0 run to gain a 4-2 lead with 15:51 left in the first stanza. MC Ashton (Greenwich, N.H.) and Rourke found the back of the net but the Colonels would answer back with a 3-0 run of their own. Malorie Knowlton (Norfolk, Mass.) got the run started with an unassisted goal while Kelly Parker (Branford, Conn.) was the other goal scorer during the run. Knowlton found the back of the net off a free position shot with 1:01 left in the first half to give Curry a 5-4 lead heading into the halftime break.

Gordon fought back to begin the second half and would tie the game up once again off a goal by Hannah Schilke (Westerly, R.I.). The lead would change hands once again after Parker found the back of the cage to reclaim a 6-5 lead and then Lauren Carroll (Providence, R.I.) scored 22 seconds later to give the Colonels a 7-5 advantage.

The Fighting Scots began to chip away at the deficit, thanks to a McCarrick goal. Curry then came back with two straight, one from Abby Carnevale (Beverly, Mass.) and Carroll to pull ahead by three, 9-6 with 15:41 to go in regulation.

The teams traded goals as the tally by Dubel with 9:12 remaining put the Colonels up 10-7. Gordon would then close the contest on a 4-0 run to take the contest by a one goal margin. Caroline Walton (Irvine, Calif.) got the run started with a goal off a free position shot. McCarrick and Walton scored goals 43 seconds apart from one another to tie the game at 10. Ashton tallied the eventual game-winner with 3:41 left in regulation to give Gordon the 11-10 victory.

Rourke led all players with four points on two goals and two assists. McCarrick and Walton pitched in hat tricks while Ashton also had three points on two goals and an assist. Schilke closed out the scoring for the visitors with a single tally.

Four Curry players (Parker, Knowlton, Dubel and Carroll) finished with two goals apiece. Lawrence and Carnevale added a goal each to close the scoring for the Colonels.

Melanie Dwyer (Reading, Mass.) picked up the win in the cage, making seven saves in 60 minutes of action. Rachel Smith (Arlington, Mass.) was credited the loss, stopping eight shots.

Curry will next play on Tuesday in a road contest at Roger Williams at 7:00 p.m. Gordon returns to action Tuesday as they host Western New England at 4:00 p.m.
