BOSTON, Mass. - Another four goals from Chelsea Phillips wasn't enough to tow the line Friday night as the Emerson Women's Lacrosse Team had their three game winning streak snapped in a down to the wire 8-7 game against Curry College. With the loss the Lions are now 5-5 on the year while the Colonels improve to 7-2.
The first half saw the Lions take it to the board first as Chelsea Phillips set up a nasty pass to Tracie Lombardo who threw down for her 12th goal of the season to take the 1-0 lead. Phillips herself struck next as she netted a free position shot to make it 2-0 EC after only 2:30 into the game.
The Colonels weren't to be denied though as they fired up for three unanswered goals in the next eight minutes of action as Haley Carey put in a free position shot before Ana Bottary connected with Mel Brickey for a goal. Ana Bottary added another goal at 19:45 to make it 3-2 CC. The Lions didn't let the lead last as they went back-t0-back with goals from Mackenzie Johnson and Chelsea Phillips made it 4-3 EC.
Victoria Kanaris did work in goal for the Lions as well in the half with five saves to keep the Lions in it, but Curry struck back with 13 minutes left in the half to send both teams into the break knotted at four.
The second half gave the fans what they came for as the Colonels and Lions went head-to-head, nearly matching each other in shots, saves and ground balls. Curry broke the stalemate first eight minutes in as Ana Bottary dropped her second goal of the game unassisted. Chelsea Phillips answered with a free position shot though to make it 5-5.
The Colonels edged away netting the net two goals though with Kaitlin Cloutier and Haley Carey going back-to-back to make it 7-5. Chelsea Phillips stepped up again for EC though with another unassisted goal to make it 7-6 before Ana Bottary gave CC the two goal advantage again with 6:51 left in the game. Emerson made the effort to bring it down to the wire with Tracie Lombardo scoring to make it 8-7 but a clutch turnover with just under 20 seconds showing on the clock caused by Kaitlin Cloutier closed out the win for Curry.
The Lions return to action on Wednesday as they continue GNAC action at Lasell. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. in Newton, Mass. The Colonels will host Gordon College on Tuesday in a 6:30 p.m. game time. (Game Recap Courtesy of Emerson Sports Information)
