Women's Lacrosse Earns 18-15 Victory Over TCCC Rival The University of New England on Senior Night

MILTON, Mass.- Curry College defeated the University of  New England on Tuesday night in Milton, Mass.  The Colonels 12th win of the season came on the team’s senior night.  With the win, the Colonels improve to 12-1 overall and 7-1 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference.  The Nor’easters fall to 4-9 overall and 1-5 in TCCC play.

Curry jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two goals by senior Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, MA) and two by sophomore Ana Bottary (Hull, MA) before UNE would stop the scoring run.  Junior Jess Dvorak (Windsor, CT) scored her first of two goals on the night to get the Nor’easters on the board.  Freshman Mel Brickey (Chelmsford, MA) answered back before UNE scored four unanswered goals, three by senior Danielle Cate (Boscawen, NH)  to tie the game at 5-5 apiece,  Hansbury regained the lead to score her team’s sixth of the half, but again UNE would go on to score three unanswered to enter the half with a 6-8 lead. 

Senior Jessie Koffman (Andover, MA) scored the first of her four to begin the second half just under two minutes of play.  The Colonels went on to score seven straight on goals by Koffman, Hansbury, Bottary and junior Lauren Glavin (Billerica, MA) to regain the lead at 13-8.  The Nor’easters would score two of their own to cut the lead to 13-10 on goals by junior Jenna Barton (Wolfboro, NH) and freshman Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, NY).  Freshman Bridget McDonald (Longmeadow, MA) answered back with her first of the night and Koffman scored her final goal to extend the Colonels lead to five.  UNE however kept fighting back scoring two more from Tavella. Brickey and senior Kelly Champagne (Wolfboro, NH) scored the final three goals for Curry.  UNE would also score three more including the final two, but Curry held on for the win. 

Koffman led the Colonels with eight points on four goals and four assists Hansbury finished the night with five goals and two assists for seven points. Bottary and Brickey each had three goals and Champange, Glavin and McDonald each chipped in for one. 

Cate and Travella each led their team with three goals while Cate chipped in for one assist.  Sophomore Nicole Steel (Ocean City, NJ) Dvorak, McLean, Beaulieu each had two goals and Barton had one.

The Colonels outshot the Nor’easters 32-27 and held a slight advantage in groundballs 18-11. 

Curry's senior goalie Maria Lynch (Billerica, MA) finished with eight saves in net in 54:57 minutes of play.  Senior Kate Noe (Greenwich, CT) played in net for 5:03 minutes and made two saves.  Freshman Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, ME) made seven saves in net for UNE.

The Colonels will travel to non-conference opponent Fitchburg State on Thursday, April 14 for a 7:00 p.m. game time. The University of New England hosts Colby-Sawyer on April 16 for a 12:00 p.m. start.
