Hansbury Scores Game-Winning Goal With Just Five Seconds Remaining in Regulation to Defeat Roger Williams, 13-12

BRISTOL, R.I. – Curry senior Ashley Hansbury (Chelmsford, Mass.) scored the game winning goal with five seconds remaining to lead Curry College Women’s Lacrosse to the 13-12 victory over host Roger Williams University Tuesday afternoon on Bayside Field.

After RWU junior Danica Delia (Norwalk, Conn.) tied the game at 12-12 with 2:35 left in the contest, Hansbury gathered the ensuing draw control and the Colonels held possession for a final shot. An RWU foul with nine seconds remaining gave Hansbury a clear lane to goal, but her shot was saved by sophomore goalkeeper Justine Sullivan (Norwell, Mass.). The rebound deflected right back to Hansbury for another shot, which found the back of the net with a mere five seconds remaining.

After an RWU timeout, the final seconds ticked harmlessly away to keep Curry’s undefeated streak alive at six games this season. The Colonels also improve to 2-0 in The Commonwealth Coast Conference, while RWU falls to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the TCCC.

Hansbury finished with a game-high five goals, while adding one assist, three ground balls and seven draw controls. Delia registered eight points for the Hawks with four goals and four assists.

RWU scored four of the second half’s first six goals to earn a 10-7 advantage and force a Curry timeout with 19:57 left in the contest. The timeout helped as the Colonels tallied the game’s next five goals and held a 12-10 lead with 10:42 remaining.  Hawks freshman Tina Carpenter (Moorestown, N.J.) scored 36 seconds later to stop the streak, but both teams remained scoreless until Delia’s marker at 2:35 tied the game at 12-12.

Curry senior goalkeeper Maria Lynch (Billerica, Mass.) recorded eight saves in the victory, while Sullivan notched 15 in the loss. Curry finished the game with the advantage in shots, 38-25, draw controls, 16-11 and turnovers 11-17. The visitors also enjoyed 12 free position attempts compared to five for RWU.

Curry looks to extend its unbeaten streak Saturday when it faces Gordon College in a 1:30 p.m. TCCC contest, while RWU moves out of the TCCC to face Wesleyan College in Middletown, Conn. Thursday at 4 p.m.(Game Recap Courtesy of Roger Williams Sports Information)
