Beverly, MA - The Curry Women's Hockey team saw their season end on Saturday in heartbreaking fashion, falling to #8 in overtime of the CNE Championship game. The Colonels end the season at 12-14-1, while the Gulls will move on to the NCAA Tournament at 22-4-1. This is the second straight season the Colonels have fallen in the conference championship game.
The game was a goalie showdown, as neither team scored in regulation. It wasn't until a little over three minutes into the extra period that Endicott found a game winner from Rivers Morris.
For the Colonels, the recipe for success was there. In the three previous matchups on the season, the Gulls averaged four goals per game. The Colonels defense was able to keep them quiet all afternoon. The Colonels also did what they did best, and controlled the faceoff circle, winning 35 of 57. But ultimately the Gulls got one past the Colonels.
Sarah Kerr had one of her best games of the season in net, stopping 35 of 36 shots. Earlier in the week she was named the CNE's Elite 20 recipient, which is given to the student-athlete with the highest GPA on a playoff qualifying team.
The Colonels will look to get back to a third straight conference championship game next year, although it would be with a very different looking roster. The team graduates 13 seniors, including leading scorer Danielle Reid, and top assist person in Grayson Goolgasian. They will also lose the best faceoff taker in the conference in Hannah Berkowitz. Of the Colonels 64 goals on the season, 42 came from the senior class, 65.6%.
