Canton, MA - The Curry Women's Hockey team picked up a critical CNE win on Saturday over Western New England, defeating the Golden Bears 3-1. The Colonels are now 6-12-1 on the season, and 5-8-0 in CNE play. The Golden Bears drop to 11-8-1 and 5-7-1. After falling to WNE in the conference championship last season, the Colonels won the season series 2-1.
After a little bit of a feeling out process in the first period, the Colonels struck first 14 minutes into the game. They were granted a penalty shot after a WNE player handled the puck in the crease. Danielle Reid would take the penalty shot, and went forehand-backhand before lifting the puck over the goalie. Just four minutes later the Colonels scored on a Margot Oxman goal, assisted by Kailyn McIntyre. The assist was McIntyre's first career point.
Despite it being a scoreless second period, it wasn't for a lack of trying on the Golden Bears side of things. They took 27 shots, all of which were stopped by Curry goalie Sarah Kerr. It wasn't until midway through the third period that the Golden Bears would get on the board, as they scored on a 5-3 power play. But they would not get another. Oxman would add an empty net goal with 30 seconds remaining, clinching the victory for the Colonels.
Kerr made 39 stops in the win for the Colonels.
With five games remaining in CNE play, the Colonels currently sit in a tie for fifth with WNE with 17 points. It is an extremely tight race, as only five points separate the two seed and six seed.
Up Next - The Colonels will host UNE next Friday at 7pm.
