Canton, MA - The Curry College Women's Hockey team was able to get some revenge over Western New England on Tuesday, as the Colonels beat the Golden Bears 2-1. This was the first time the teams met since WNE took down the Colonels in the CCC Championship game last season. The Colonels now sit at 5-7-1 on the season, and 4-5-0 in CNE play. The Golden Bears, who received votes in both of the major polls, now sit at 9-5-0 and 3-4-0.
Late in the first period, Kalie Gruhlke was able to get the puck off the boards in the defensive end, sending it to Hannah Berkowitz, who executed a perfect outlet pass to Bella Mardesich, who was able to put the Colonels up 1-0 on the break away goal.
It stayed that way until six minutes into the second when WNE tied things back up. But eight minutes later Kayley Hansen won a faceoff in the WNE zone, Gruhlke would collect it and pass it to Ava Doyle, who fired an off target shot that ricocheted off the boards right to Ali Olorenshaw, who fluttered the puck into the back of the net.
Despite a third period that saw WNE outshoot the Colonels 11-3, the Colonels were able to hold on to the win.
With the shots only slightly favoring the Colonels 28-25, the biggest difference in the game came at the faceoff circle, where the Colonels won 30 of 45, led by Berkowitz winning 10 of 14, Reid eight of 14, and Hansen seven of 10.
Sarah Kerr made 24 saves in net for the Colonels.
The Colonels are now 2-6-4 all-time against the Golden Bears, with this being the first time they have beaten them at home. The lone other win for Curry came on November 6th, 2021 by a 3-0 score. That was the first win in program history.
Up Next - The Colonels will take on another CNE opponent on Friday when they travel to Endicott for a 5pm game.
