Women's Hockey Starts Season Off With Win Over UMB

Canton, MA - The Curry Women's Hockey team took on UMass Boston on Friday, winning 3-1 in their season opener. The Colonels are now 2-0 all-time against the Beacons, also beating them 3-1 last season.

The scoring opened up with just under four minutes left in the first period. Rian Faery took the puck, and deked a player out, before putting the puck over the goalie's shoulder for a fancy goal. A freshman playing in her first career game, it was Faery's first career goal. The goal was assisted by Kayley Hansen and Grayson Goolgasian.

The Colonels then doubled their lead a little over five minutes into the second period, this time on a Danielle Reid goal, again assisted by Goolgasian. The Colonels would add another goal early in the third, on a Margot Oxman goal. The Beacons would get one back quickly, but were unable to get anything else going the rest of the way.

In net, Sarah Kerr made 21 saves on 22 shots for the win.

A key to the game was the faceoff circle, and the Colonels dominated. Both Hannah Berkowitz and Reid each won 14 faceoffs, with Berkowitz going 14-21 and Reid going 14-19.

A story to watch throughout the season is the goal battle between Reid and Goolgasian. They both entered the season with 28 career goals, the most in program history. Reid has taken an early lead in what should be a back and forth battle all season.

Up Next - The Colonels will kick off conference play next week with a road game at Nichols on Friday at 5:40pm.
