Women's Ice Hockey Draws with UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Curry College women's ice hockey team played the University of New England to a 3-3 tie Saturday evening in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the Harold Alfond Forum.

Curry won 1-0 in the shootout, but the result will only come into play as a potential fifth-tier tiebreaker at the end of the season. The game officially goes into the books as a tie with both the NCAA and CCC.

The draw sees Curry move to 2-3-1 overall on the season and 0-1-1 in the CCC.

UNE drew first blood with a pair of goals in the first six minutes of the game to jump out to the early advantage, but the second period saw Curry climb back into the contest.

Just under three minutes into the second, junior Hannah Berkowitz (Mattawan, Mich.) got Curry on the board by potting a goal on the rebound for her third goal of the season. Assists were credited to junior Danielle Reid (Plainview, N.Y.) and sophomore Megan Sawatzky (Lemont, Ill.).

Forty-eight seconds later, junior Grayson Goolgasian (Johnston, R.I.) knotted the score at two on a breakaway for her fifth goal of the season. Assisting on the play were freshman Julia Small (Methuen, Mass.) and junior Kalie Gruhlke (Fall River, Wis.). Midway through the second, UNE retook the lead to take a 3-2 lead into the third.

The Nor'easters were primed to take three points from the Colonels, but Berkowitz tied the score on her second goal of the evening when she swatted home a one-timer with just 1:18 remaining in regulation and her team's net empty. The marker was assisted by Goolgasian and sophomore Ava Doyle (Lynnfield, Mass.).

Neither team found the net in the extra session, and only Reid scored in the shootout for the Colonels.

Between the pipes, graduate student Soleil Archambeault (London, Ontario) made 38 saves to preserve the tie for Curry, with eight saves coming in the overtime. Not included in her 38 saves were three stops in the shootout.

Next up for the Colonels, they will travel to Western New England for a Thursday evening matchup against the Golden Bears in CCC action. Puck drop is slated for 7:40 p.m.
