Women's Ice Hockey Drops UNE on Hockey Fights Cancer Day

CANTON, Mass. - The Curry College women's ice hockey team defeated the University of New England 3-2 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action Saturday afternoon at the Canton Ice House.

With the victory, Curry improves to 8-11-2 overall on the season and 5-8-2 in the CCC.

UNE scored the only goal of the first period on an unassisted Carolyn Curley goal at the 18:09 of the period.

Just under three minutes into the second period, Curry leveled the score when Hannah Berkowitz (Mattawan, Mich.) banked one in from below the goal line for her second goal of the season. Sophomore Ali Olorenshaw (Saskatoon, Sasketchewan) and freshman Megan Sawatzky (Lemont, Ill.) earned assists on the play.

Midway through the period, Curry took its first lead of the night when freshman Margot Oxman (Lower Merion, Pa.) tallied her fourth goal of the season. The shorthanded, unassisted tally came on a wrist shot from the top of the left wing circle that froze the Nor'easter netminder and sailed into the net on the short side.

Nine minutes into the third, sophomore Danielle Stein (Plainview, N.Y.) dangled through the attacking zone and roofed a shot to give the Colonels some much needed insurance. Stein's seventh goal of the season was assisted by Oxman.

Meghan Hamilton got the visitors to within one with eight and a half minutes to play, but Curry senior netminder Soleil Archambeault (London, Ontario) held tough to preserve her sixth victory of the season. She finished the evening with 27 saves and 29 chances.

Next up for the Colonels, they will play their final non-conference game of the season on Friday evening with a road trip to Worcester State University. Puck drop is slated for 7:10 p.m.
