Women's Ice Hockey Trips Up Nichols

HARRISVILLE, R.I. - The Curry College women's ice hockey team finished off the weekend sweep of Nichols College on Saturday evening, defeating the Bison 2-1 in Commonwealth Coast Conference action at the June Rockwell Levy Rink.

With the victory, Curry improves to 6-6-2 overall on the season and 4-3-2 in the CCC. The win also closes out the first weekend sweep in the history of the Curry women's ice hockey program.

Nichols outshot the visiting Colonels 13-11 in the opening 20 minutes, but neither team was able to find the back of the net in the frame.

Just over a minute into the second period, sophomore Paige Bourgoin (Wales, Maine) netted her first collegiate goal on a breakaway to put the visitors ahead 1-0. Freshman Katie Courteau (Warroad, Minn.) assisted on the Bourgoin tally.

The Bison leveled the score on a Kacy Johnson goal late in the second period, sending the contest to the third period knotted a 1-1.

Midway through the final frame, freshman Tommi Nash (Point Pleasant, N.J.) hopped on a loose puck in a goal mouth scramble and chipped it past Nichols netminder Victoria Bakopanos for her first collegiate goal. The tally, assisted by sophomore Hannah Berkowitz (Mattawan, Mich.) held up as the game-winning goal.

Curry senior goaltender Soleil Archambeault (London, Ontario) turned aside 33 of the 34 shots she faced to earn her fifth victory of the season.

The Colonels will go back on the road next Friday night, travelling to Suffolk University for a 6 p.m. puck drop from East Boston's Louis E. Porrazzo Memorial Skating Rink.
