MILTON, Mass. - Curry College defeated Suffolk University 68-65 in a Conference of New England women's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Dr. Eleanor Meyerhoff Katz Gymnasium.
With the win, the Colonels' overall record improves to 6-11, and their conference record bumps up to 3-7.
The Colonels pushed the pace of play from tip-off with each Curry starter scoring in the first, led by Lauren Dunn who ignited the home team's efforts with a pair of threes to help amass an eight-point lead (16-8) with 1:06 remaining in the quarter.
Curry continued to outplay the Rams in the second quarter, opening up the period with a three-pointer by Samantha Conti which ignited a 10-point scoring run capped off by a Lauren Morse triple that put the Colonels on top by 14 (26-12) halfway through the second.
Suffolk fought back into the game in the second half, pulling within one point of the Curry lead multiple times throughout the third and fourth quarters. Hanging on to a 63-61 advantage with just 40 seconds remaining, Sophie Hilbrunner made a clutch block on defense to put the ball back in the Colonels' hands, forcing the Rams to foul, allowing Curry to put the game away at the free throw line.
Kylie McCarthy led the Colonels with a season-personal best of 19 points while adding three steals on the defensive side of the ball. Dunn was effective on both sides of the ball with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists, and five steals. Hilbrunner was another high-impact player with 13 points, a game-high nine rebounds, five assists, and four blocks.
Curry College returns to action on Tuesday, January 28th, with a road game against Endicott beginning at 5:30 p.m.
