Women's Basketball Falls to Suffolk

BOSTON – The Curry College women's basketball team opened its second weekend of play with a 71-43 loss at Suffolk University on Friday night.

Powered by junior Emily Welling (Warwick, N.Y.)'s double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds, the Rams picked up their third straight win and improved to 4-1 on the season. Junior Natalie Fraioli (Sutton, Mass.) compiled 16 points, two boards, two assists, and two steals in 26 minutes. Freshman reserve Amanda DeAngelis (Londonderry, N.H.) chipped in 10 points, five rebounds, two steals, and a block.

Sophomore guard Kaitlynn Smith (Hull, Mass.) led the Colonels (0-3 overall) with 15 points. Classmate Kirsten Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) added eight points, seven caroms, two assists, and two steals.

Curry got on the board first with a jumper from Kir. Smith, but that would be the only lead that would get in the contest. Suffolk would hold the Colonels to just six more points in the quarter on ten percent shooting and led 15-8 after one.

Suffolk opened the second stanza on a 9-0 run capped off by a pair of made free throws from DeAngelis give the Rams a 24-8 lead with 4:59 left in the half. The home squad outscored the Colonels 19-8 in the period and led 34-16 at intermission.

The Colonels started the third quarter with a triple from Kai. Smith to make the score 34-19, but the Rams responded with 11 straight points to go up 25 (45-19). The lead would reach 28 as the third quarter came to a close with Suffolk having the advantage, 52-24.

The final quarter was a closer battle with Suffolk edging Curry, 19-18. The Rams' lead reached as many as 29, settling at the 71-42 final.

Curry completes the home-and-home series with the Rams on Saturday, March 13 at the Katz Gymnasium. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
