Nor’easters Pull Away in Fourth to Top Women’s Basketball

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College women's basketball team threatened to disrupt the University of New England's (UNE) perfect Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) record on Thursday evening, but fell short, as the Nor'easters outscored the Colonels 15-5 in the final frame to lock up a 61-48 victory. After the win, UNE sits at 11-3 overall, with a 5-0 mark in league play. The Colonels move to 1-3 in the CCC and 3-10 on the season.

After benefitting from a 2-0 advantage before the clock even started, the Colonels stretched out to a 10-4 lead as Kristyanna Remillard (Abington, Mass.) sank a jumper with 4:09 to play in the first. UNE would not back down, however, as the visitors scored eight unanswered points to take a lead of their own at 12-10. Curry closed the quarter on a brief run to take a 15-14 lead into the second, but the teams remained neck-and-neck.

Curry struck first in the second stanza, bringing the score to 17-14, but they would not score again until half of the frame expired, allowing the Nor'easters to jump out to a 24-17 advantage. Despite the deficit, the Colonels clawed back into the game and did not let the score get out-of-hand, as a buzzer-beater by Gina Coote (Dedham, Mass.) knotted the score at 30-30 as the teams headed to halftime.

The visitors took advantage of receiving the first possession out of the break, as Sadie Nelson (Windham, Maine) hit a three to retake the lead for UNE. The teams traded leads and fought to another tie score, this time at 37-all, as Katie Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) nailed a jumper with 5:38 left in the third. Though Curry stayed hot on their trail, UNE enjoyed a 46-43 edge as time expired and the teams headed to the fourth.

In the final frame, it would again be the Nor'easters who scored first, as a bucket by Jocelyn Chaput (Nashua, N.H.) made the score 48-43. A score by Remillard cut the lead again to a one-possession deficit, but UNE continued to tack on points and soon built a 54-45 lead with just three-and-a-half minutes remaining on the clock. Remillard would account for each of the Colonels' five points in the quarter, but it would not be enough, as the Nor'easters locked up a conference win by a final score of 61-48.

Chaput led the Nor'easter offense with 13 points, eight boards, and seven assists, all game-highs. Remillard matched her point total, while Kirsten Smith (East Bridgewater, Mass.) grabbed eight boards of her own, both to top the Colonels. Four players turned in a pair of assists for Curry, but no one managed to notch a third helper.

UNE will look to stay unbeaten in conference play as they host the Nichols College Bison at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 11. The Colonels will also get back to work on Saturday at 1 o'clock, as they travel to take on the Seahawks of Salve Regina University, another CCC opponent.
