SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Curry fell to host Western New England University, 85-50, in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) women's basketball action Tuesday night in Springfield, Mass. The Colonels fall to 7-9 overall and 4-5 in conference play, while the Golden Bears improve to 9-7 on the season and 6-3 in CCC play.

Over the first five minutes of the game, WNE went on a 17-0 run before freshman Emily Irwin (Billerica, Mass.) split a pair of free-throws to put the score at 17-1. The Golden Bears continued to increase their lead over the rest of the quarter and after ten full minutes; the score was 34-11.

WNE started the second quarter on a 12-0 run to put their lead to 35 points with a score of 46-11. The teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, but the Golden bears were able to sustain their lead, ending the first half with a score of 58-20.

Irwin led Curry with seven first half points while dishing out three assists. Senior Kerry White (Windham, N.H.) led the game with seven total rebounds through the first 20, while adding a steal. Junior Emily Anderson (Rocky Hill, Conn.) led the game with 18 points while adding three rebounds. Classmate Paige Young (Berlin, Conn.) pulled down six rebounds and added 10 points for WNE.

Over the last five minutes of the third quarter, the Colonels went on a 13-0 run of their own before junior Sammie Battaini (Leominster, Mass.) hit a three before the quarter ended to put the score back to 73-43 after three full.  The final frame was much of the same, with junior Kathleen Rafanelli (Exeler, R.I.) closing out the scoring to put the final at 85-50.

Junior Alyssa Keeney (Coventry, Conn.) led Curry with 10 points with senior classmates Christina Deiorio (Stoughton, Mass.) and Shannon Griffith (West Hartford, Conn.) following closely behind with nine with Griffith pulling down three rebounds. White finished with seven total boards to lead the Colonels with sophomore Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) following closely behind with six.

Anderson led the game with 19 points while adding four rebounds for the Golden Bears. Young led the game, grabbing nine rebounds and chipping in 11 points.

Both teams return to conference action Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. as WNE hosts the University of New England while Curry hosts Salve Regina University.
