Women's Basketball Edged 70-69 in Overtime at Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – Freshman guard Nicole Bostic (North Easton, Mass.) poured in a team-high 20 points including the game-winning basket with 9.4 seconds remaining in overtime to propel the Framingham State University women’s basketball team to a 70-69 victory over Curry College this afternoon in non-conference women’s basketball action.
With the win, the Rams improve to 5-2 on the year, while the Colonels fall to 4-5 with the loss.

In a tightly contested game that saw 11 ties and 14 lead changes, the Rams took a four point lead into the half (35-31) and opened up the game’s largest lead, seven points, three minutes into the second half on a drive and dish from Bostic to sophomore Kay Smith (Boston, Mass.).

Curry chipped away at the Rams lead and tied the score, 50-50, on a three point play from junior forward Julia Scrubb (Stowe, VT) with 8:45 remaining in regulation.

The game would go back and forth over the next six minutes with the two teams trading baskets and the lead.  Neither team led by more than one till Curry went ahead by three, 60-57, on a pair of free throws from freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) and put back on the offensive glass by freshman guard Lindsey Dionne (Portland, Conn.) with 2:28 remaining.

Sophomore guard Kristen Hoffman (Foxboro, Mass.) cut the Colonels lead to one with a jumper just outside the paint with 1:03 on the clock.  Curry regained possession and work the clock down with Scrubb missing a jumper and Hoffman grabbing the rebound with 38 ticks left on the clock.  The Rams ran their offense and with the shot clock and game clock winding down Hoffman was fouled cutting the lane with nine seconds left.  Hoffman sank both putting the Rams back in front 61-60.

Curry pushed the ball up the court and spread the floor giving Beltz a lane to the basketball.  Beltz drove down the left side of the lane and was fouled as time expired.  Beltz went to the line to shoot two with no time on the clock and a chance to tie and win the game for the Colonels.  She sank one of two sending the game to overtime tied at 61.

In the overtime, Curry jumped out to a quick lead on a pair of Scrubb free throws, but the Rams answered with five straight points from Hoffman on a drive and three pointer to retake the lead (66-63) with 3:04 remaining.

A pair of Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) free throws cut the lead to one, but a Bostic put back with 1:08 left put the Rams back up by three.

Beltz answered with a driving layup to cut the lead back to one and after a Rams miss, a pair of Dionne free throws put the Colonels up one (69-68) with 28.1 remaining.

After a time out, the Rams worked the ball and Bostic missed an open jumper in the lane but followed up her own miss with an offensive rebound and put back with 9.4 on the clock.  Curry had one last chance for the win, but Christina Deiorio’s (Stoughton, Mass.) attempt for a three rattled in and out as time expired.

Bostic finished the game with 20 points on 6-of-14 shooting from the floor to go along with two rebounds and a game-high five assists, while Hoffman finished with a double double of 18 points and a team-high 11 boards.  Sophomore guard Cassie Liston (Stoneham, Mass.) finished with nine points, four rebounds and four assists, while senior Emily Clark (Melrose, Mass.) grabbed eight boards.

Beltz finished with a game-high 24 points on 8-of-14 from the floor and 6-of-9 from the line, while Dionne finished with ten points and seven rebounds off the bench.  Scrubb had a strong game for the Colonels and just missed a double double as she finished with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

The Rams return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference game against Anna Maria College at 7 p.m., while the Colonels are off until January 7th when they travel to Salve Regina at 1 p.m. (Game recap courtesy of FSU Sports Information)
