Women's Basketball Holds Off Late Rally to Defeat Conference Foe Gordon, 54-52
MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College Women’s Basketball team held off a late rally by visiting Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Gordon College to record a 54-52 victory. The Colonels improved to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in CCC action, while the Fighting Scots fell to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

Curry scored the game’s first seven points, five of which were scored by junior Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.). Gordon responded and took its only lead of the game with a 9-0 run that was capped off with a layup by freshman Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) with 13:27 left in the first period. Over the remainder of the first period, the Colonels slowly built their lead, taking an eight point lead (35-27) at intermission.

Curry’s largest lead of the contest (53-41) came after freshman Kylie Beltz (Pequot Lakes, Minn.) sank a free throw at 4:53 of the second half. The Fighting Scots went on to score the next 11 points, cutting the deficit to one (53-52) with 33 seconds remaining. After junior Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) made a free throw with two seconds left in regulation, the visitors were unable to get off a shot as time expired.

Sophomore Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass) led Curry with 14 points, while Beltz chipped in with 13 points and a game-high five steals. Rafferty pulled down a team-high nine boards.

Gordon was led by freshman Leanna Tallamy (Wantage, N.J.) with a game-high 17 points. Kratche and sophomore Lauren Kranyak (Locust Grove, Va.) pulled down 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively.

The Colonels return to action on December 8, travelling to Johnson & Wales for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off, while Gordon resumes action on December 7 at New England College for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
