68-62 Overtime Loss at Suffolk Halts Women's Basketball's Eight-Game Win Streak

BOSTON, Mass. - Junior Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) and the Suffolk University Women's Basketball team (4-5 overall) halted the Curry College Colonels (8-1 overall) eight game win streak with a 68-62 overtime victory Thursday evening at the Regan Gymnasium. Black recorded her first double-double of the season scoring 19 points along with 10 rebounds for the Rams.

Suffolk trailed at the half 38-29 and were chasing the Colonels the entire second half until sophomore Lindsey Rogers (Gloucester, Mass.) went to the free throw line with ten seconds remaining. Rogers connected on her second of two free throw attempts to even the game at 59-59 and send it into the extra period.

Sophomore Jacqueline Vienneau (Salem, N.H.) opened up the scoring in overtime connecting on a three-pointer to give the Rams the lead for good. Black scored later in the period after grabbing an offensive rebound, before Rogers went back to the line connecting on a pair of free throws to give the Rams a seven point spread at 66-59 with 29 seconds remaining in overtime.

Curry started the game strong shooting 50% as a team from the field in the opening period as sophomore Hailey Rafferty (Worcester, Mass.) had 10 first-half points giving the Colonels a nine-point edge to start the second half. Things would change however as the Colonels committed 16 second-half turnovers that allowed the Rams to climb back into the game.

Vienneau accounted for three steals for the Rams in the second half comeback, while she netted seven points and finished the game with 12 points and four assists.

Sophomore Julia Scrubb (Stowe, Vt.) led Curry with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Rafferty and freshman Ashley Assarian (Chicopee, Mass.) each had 12 points.

Curry held the edge in rebounds by a 49-43 margin, but also committed 34 turnovers which resulted in 15 points for the Rams.

Rogers finished the game with nine points and six rebounds for Suffolk, while freshman Jennifer Ruys (Wallingford, Conn.) had 14 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Freshman Marisa Cataldo (Stoneham, Mass.) had a strong overtime period for the Rams collecting three rebounds, as well as the assist on Vienneau's lead changing three point shot.

Both teams will be idle until January 2011. Curry will be back in action on January 8 as they host Western New England College in The Commonwealth Coast Conference action at 1:00 p.m. Suffolk will be back in action on January 11 as they host Pine Manor College to open up their Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule at the Regan Gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. (Game recap courtesy of Suffolk Sports Information)
