Softball Can’t Weather the Storm Against Nor’easters

BIDDEFORD, Maine - Curry College softball was swept in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader by the University of New England Saturday afternoon at Nor'easter Stadium. With the losses, the Colonels fall to an overall record of 10-14 and a conference record of 1-7.

GAME ONE: UNE 7, Curry 2

Curry picked up its first run in the top of the third inning when Renee Gonneville (Saco, Maine ) reached second base thanks to a throwing error by the third baseman. After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt by Mary Rodrigues (Milford, Conn.), Gonneville was scored by a ssacrifice3 fly by Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) to put the Colonels on the board.

Ferullo was also responsible for Curry's second run in the top of the fifth, knocking in Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) with a double to left center field. O'Kleasky reached second on a double of her own to lead off the inning.

Jillian Rogers pitched the entire game for the Colonels, striking out 12 batters while only walking two.

GAME TWO: UNE 2, Curry 1

The second game of the doubleheader was a certified pitchers duel with Caitlyn Wood () pitching a full 10.2 innings for the Colonels, allowing zero earned runs and only six hits throughout the contest. Wood struck out three batters and threw nearly 140 pitches over the course of the game.

Curry's only run arrived in the top of the first inning starting with a leadoff single up the middle by Gonneville. A bunt single by Ferullo and a ground out put Gonneville at third base for Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.), who hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score the run and give the Colonels a lead that held until the bottom of the sixth inning.

The game ended in an anticlimactic way in the 11th inning with a passed ball scoring the deciding run from third base.

Curry College returns to action on Sunday, April 14th, with a home doubleheader against Nichols beginning at 12 p.m.
