Softball Splits with Suffolk

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team split a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader against Suffolk University Friday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field.

The Colonels fell in game one 1-0, before taking down the Rams 4-1 in game two.

With the split, Curry moves to 17-20-1 overall and 5-11 in the CCC.

The games were originally scheduled to be played at Suffolk, but were rescheduled and moved to Curry. The Rams were the designated home team and batted second in both games.

Game 1 - Suffolk 1, Curry 0

Suffolk scored the only run it would need in the bottom of the first inning. Lily O'Neil drove in the run with a double into the gap in left center, plating leadoff hitter Caitlin Murphy.

Curry threatened in the top of the seventh with a pair of baserunners and only one away, but were unable to score the tying run.

Despite the loss, sophomore Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) looked strong, allowing just the one earned run on four hits in a complete game defeat while striking out six. Her punchout in the bottom of the second inning gave her 100 strikeouts on the season.

Four players recorded one hit each for Curry in the loss. Rogers, Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.), Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.), and Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) all recorded singles for Curry.

Game 2 - Curry 4, Suffolk 1

Curry got on the board first in the top of the second, taking advantage of four Suffolk errors in the frame. After freshman Emma Burke (Beverly, Mass.) and King each reached on errors early in the frame, sophomore Natalia O'Kleasky (Coventry, R.I.) hit a routine pop-up with two outs that was dropped by the first baseman, allowing both runners to score and putting Curry ahead 2-0.

Suffolk got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a Savannah Scripter RBI single, but that was as close as the Rams would get.

Curry added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to seal the win. O'Kleasky notched an RBI on a base hit up the middle, followed by a McDermott RBI fielder's choice.

Junior Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) got the win in the circle for Curry, allowing just one earned run on seven hits in six innings pitched with one strikeout, earning her seventh win of the season. Rogers came in and tossed a 1-2-3 seventh to pick up her second save.

Rogers led the Colonels with three hits in the victory, while O'Kleasky and Bussiere each notched a pair.

Next up for the Colonels, they will host Senior Day against Endicott College on Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
