Softball Earns First CCC Win in Split with Roger Williams

MILTON, Mass. - The Curry College softball team shook off a game one loss to earn a split with Roger Williams University Saturday afternoon in a Commonwealth Coast Conference doubleheader at D. Forbes Will Field. Curry dropped game one 3-2, but picked up a 2-1 victory in game two.

With the split, Curry moves to 5-20 overall on the season and snaps a 13-game skid. The Colonels also move to 1-5 in the CCC.

Game 1 - Roger Williams 3, Curry 2

The Hawks rallied from a 2-1 deficit to take game one from the host Colonels.

Each team scored once in the first inning. After Roger Williams took a 1-0 lead in the top of the frame, senior Lexi Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) leveled the score with an RBI single to centerfield.

Curry took the lead an inning later when sophomore Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) singled off the third base bag to score freshman Natalia Okleasky (Coventry, R.I.) from second.

Roger Williams scored single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 3-2 lead which they would never relinquish.

Curry freshman pitcher Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) looked strong despite the loss, allowing just two earned runs on six hits while striking out three over seven innings.

Curry was led offensively by leadoff hitter Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.), who notched three hits with one run scored. Ferullo finished game one with two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base.

Game 2 - Curry 2, Roger Williams 1

A methodical pitching performance from sophomore Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) lifted Curry to the game two victory.

Wood needed just 72 pitches to earn the complete game victory, allowing only one unearned run on two hits with three strikeouts. She lost her no-hitter with two outs in the fourth, and the only other hit she allowed came on a seeing-eye single up the middle in the top of the seventh.

Curry opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Rogers hit an RBI single up the middle to score Bussiere and put the Colonels up 1-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, Curry extended its lead to 2-0 on a pinch-hit RBI double to right center from freshman Kate Hancock (Holden, Mass.), scoring sophomore Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.).

McDermott was the only player on either team with multiple hits in game two, going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

Curry will turn around to play Endicott College on the road in more CCC action on Sunday afternoon. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
