Softball Drops Pair of Extra Inning Affairs to Open 2022

LEESBURG, Fla. - The Curry College softball team opened its 2022 season with a pair of losses Sunday evening at The Spring Games at the Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.

With the defeats, Curry falls to 0-2 overall on the young season.

Game 1 - Wisconsin-River Falls 4, Curry 3 (8 innings)

Curry could not maintain an early lead as Wisconsin-River Falls rallied to spoil the Colonel season opener.

Curry opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when junior Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) slapped one to right field that was misplayed by Falcon junior Mavis Sachs. Sophomore Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) hustled home from second to score the first Colonel run of the season.

The Colonels extended their lead in the top of the fourth inning when senior Sienna Kulpa (Taunton, Mass.) drove in a pair with a base hit to left. The hit brought home pinch runner Maddy Burns (Salem, N.H.) from third, before Kulpa intentionally got into a rundown between first and second to allow McDermott to cross the plate for the second time on the afternoon.

The Falcons rallied to tie the score with three runs in the bottom of the fifth, all coming with two outs.

Neither team crossed the plate in the sixth or seventh innings, forcing the game to extras. After Curry couldn't score in the top of the inning, Keegan Piton ended the game for the Falcons with a walkoff single in the first at-bat of the bottom of the frame.

Freshman Jillian Rogers (East Freetown, Mass.) impressed in her first collegiate game, striking out six and allowing just three earned runs in 7+ innings pitched.

Game 2 - FDU Florham 3, Curry 0 (8 innings)

Game two was a pitchers duel from start to finish, and headed to extra innings in a scoreless tie.

Freshman Hailey King (Cranston, R.I.) was dealing for Curry right from the start, shutting out the Devils over the first seven innings of the contest while striking out six. It wasn't until the top of the eighth inning that FDU Florham finally broke through with three runs.

Bussiere recorded two of Curry's three hits offensively in game two, while McDermott drew a pair of walks.

Curry will be back in action on Monday evening, continuing its Florida Spring Break trip with a contest against the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
