Softball Falls in Doubleheader at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Curry College softball team lost two Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) games at Western New England University on Saturday afternoon, 5-0 in game one, and 3-2 in extra innings in game two.

Game One – Western New England 5, Curry 0

The Golden Bears plated two runs in the first inning, both coming by way of homers. Sophomore Cori Rizzo (Methuen, Mass.) hit her home run to center while junior Dina DiBlasio (Norwalk, Conn.) touched them all on a homer to right center.

Western New England added another pair in the third. DiBlasio and sophomore Kailey Carrano (West Haven, Conn.) registered back-to-back solo homers to increase the lead to 4-0.

The Golden Bears tacked its final run in the fourth when Rizzo doubled down the left field line, bringing around freshman Lizzie Weston (Ridgewood, N.J.).

Sophomore Megan Beebe (Ellington, Conn.) picked up the win in the circle. She struck out seven while only walking one over 6.0 innings.

Senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) was tagged with the loss. She surrendered four runs on five hits to go along with one walk.

Game Two – Western New England 3, Curry 2 (8 innings)

After a scoreless first four frames, the Golden Bears plated the opening run of the contest in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left from Rizzo to put Western New England up 1-0.

The Colonels snagged the advantage in the sixth, scoring twice. Junior Alexis Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) drove in senior Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) on a groundout to second base. Freshman Taylor McDermott followed with an RBI single to second base, which plated Newcomb to give Curry the 2-1 lead.

Western New England sent the game-tying run home in the seventh on a DiBlasio single up the middle, bringing around freshman Kaleigh Blades (Merrimack, Mass.).

The Golden Bears walked off with the win in the eighth on a bunt single down the first base line, which scored sophomore Paige Baca (Lorma Linda, Calif.).

Senior Paige Uliase (Meriden, Conn.) remained perfect in the circle (7-0). She was credited with the win, tossing the final 2.2 innings, and allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

Curry (5-20 overall, 4-12 CCC) will wrap up the regular season at Western New England (14-6 overall, 11-5 CCC) on Wednesday, April 28 in doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
