Softball Splits with Bison in League Play

DUDLEY, Mass. – The Curry College softball team split a pair of games at Nichols College on Friday afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action.

Game One – Curry 7, Nichols 5

Curry took an early 1-0 lead courtesy of an error by graduate student Taylor Commesso (Hingham, Mass.), which allowed senior Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) to score. The Colonels added another in the top of the second on a double down the right field line from junior Julia Price (Islip, N.Y.). The two-bagger plated freshman Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.).

Curry tacked on three in the third to build a 5-0 advantage. Junior Alexis Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) flew out to center field, which was deep enough to score Dimond from third. Freshman Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.) reached on an error, bringing around senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.). Ferullo rounded out the scoring in the frame with a bunt single to plate senior Jordan Perzan (Burlington, Conn.).

The Bison answered back with their of their own in the home half of the third. Senior Colleen Callahan (Billerica, Mass.) singled to center to score sophomore Allie Brown (Middlebury, Conn.). Commesso reached first on an error and then Callahan scored on an error at first base. Hailey Bogusz (Montague, Mass.) closed the scoring with a single to plate Commesso.

The squads traded two runs apiece in the sixth. Sophomore Madison Schwartz (Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice as she got on via a bunt. The play brought around Ferullo. Newcomb contributed a single to right center with two on. The base knock scored sophomore Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.) to go up 7-3.

Nichols' two runs came by way of a double to left from Bogusz and a sacrifice fly to center from Mackenzie Bourgault (Fairhaven, Mass.).

The Bison were able to get one runner on in the seventh, but were unable to get the tying or winning runs across as Curry came away with the two-run victory.

Sophomore Camryn Willis (Foxboro, Mass.) picked up the win in the circle. She gave up five runs (two earned) on eight hits. Freshman Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) preserved the lead and tossed the last two innings for the save.

Sophomore Alyssa Ouellette (Auburn, N.H.) was tagged with the loss, surrendering seven runs (four earned) on eight hits. She struck out three and walked one.

Game Two – Nichols 8, Curry 7

Nichols got on the board in the first inning, registering two runs.

Curry came back with three in the third to gain the advantage. Newcomb singled to third base to score Dimond for the opening tally of the frame. Perzan followed it up with a two-run triple to right center to bring home Buckner and Newcomb.

After a scoreless top of the fourth, Nichols matched the Colonels with three runs. Graduate student Amanda Alioto (Patchogue, N.Y.) doubled down the right field line to tie the game at three. Bourgault singled and Brown doubled to right center to give the Bison a 5-3 lead.

Curry tied the contest and pulled back in front in the fifth. Ferullo contributed a two-RBI single to right field plate Perzan and freshman Kaylee Medas (Bridgewater, Mass.). The Colonels re-gained the lead following another two-RBI single to right field from Willis. Ferullo and freshman Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) came around to score.

The Bison deadlocked the contest at seven-all in the fifth on a two-run homer by Bogusz.

Nichols would score the eventual game-winning run in the sixth after Callahan reached on an error, allowing Bourgault to cross home for the 8-7 final.

Junior Candice Nelson (Oxford, Mass.) went the distance and gave up seven runs on 10 hits. She also struck out four and walked one.

Wood lasted two innings and gave up one run on three hits with two strikeouts in the loss.

Curry (5-9 overall, 4-6 CCC) and Nichols (11-7 overall, 6-4 CCC) will play another doubleheader tomorrow, Saturday, April 10 at D. Forbes Will Field in Milton, Mass. First pitch is slated for noon.
