Softball Sweeps Salve Regina to Open League Slate

MILTON, Mass. – The Curry College softball team took two from visiting Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon at D. Forbes Will Field. The Colonels captured game one by a final of 7-6 and the grabbed the second, 9-1, in five innings.  

Game One – Curry 7, Salve Regina 6

Salve Regina scored first in the contest on a two-run homer to left by freshman Christina Braid (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) which drove in classmate Maddie Capetta (Raritan, N.J.) to put the Seahawks up 2-0.

Curry came back with a five-run third inning to gain control. Junior Alexis Buckner (Foxboro, Mass.) singled up the middle to score Emily Bussiere (Stow, Mass.). Freshman Taylor McDermott (Durham, Conn.) doubled to right field to plate Bucker and then freshman Jordan Ferullo (Burlington, Mass.) singled to right to plate McDermott. Senior Jocelyn Dimond (Weare, N.H.) reached on a fielder's choice. The play was deep enough to score freshman Madelyn White (Franklin, Mass.). The scoring closed when Dimond stole second and Ferullo scored on a throwing error to put the Colonels in front, 5-2.

Salve Regina got one of the runs back in the fourth with an RBI single to center field from freshman Francesca Rubino (Burlington, Mass.), which helped score classmate Jessica Roberts (Dix Hills, N.Y.).

The Colonels had the answer in the home half of the fourth with two more runs. Senior Taylor Newcomb (Millville, Mass.) doubled to center to score Bussiere and Buckner had an RBI double to bring around Newcomb.

The Seahawks plated one in the fifth and two more in the sixth as the Colonels would come away with the one-run victory.

Freshman Caitlyn Wood (Saugus, Mass.) was credited with the victory in the circle. She gave up six runs (one earned) over five and one-third innings. Newcomb tossed the final inning to pick up the save. Junior Maddy Fluke (Douglas, Mass.) was tagged with the loss for Salve Regina.

Game Two – Curry 9, Salve Regina 1

As in game one, the Seahawks struck first when in the opening frame, junior Nikki Vanelli (Quakertown, Pa.) homered to left field to give Salve Regina the 1-0 lead.

Curry plated two in the home half of the first after McDermott had a single to left field to score Newcomb and Dimond drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Buckner home.

Buckner was back in the action in the second when she doubled to left center to send Bussiere around to touch home. After a fly out, White flew out to center field, which was deep enough to score Newcomb.

The Colonels would add four in the third and one in the fifth to end the game after five innings, 9-1.

Newcomb tossed all five innings, only giving up one run on four hits in the win. Freshman Anna Mihalek (Farmington, Conn.) got the loss, giving up eight runs on five hits in just three innings.

Curry (2-2 overall, 2-0 CCC) will remain home to host the Seahawks in a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 31 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
